As our first regional event of 2010, we are delighted to welcome Darren Toms from Alexander Forbes Trustee Service, which is a trust corporation and one of the leading providers of independent trusteeship to ongoing schemes and to those in wind up. Darren joined AFTS in 2000 and has over 13 years of pension experience behind him. Having been initially appointed to project manage a portfolio of defined benefit schemes through the process of winding up where the principal employer was insolvent, the last 6 years has seen Darren develop into an educational role, providing training to insolvency and turnaround specialists about pensions issues, whilst also heading up the defined contribution team within AFTS.
AFTS has also kindly agreed to sponsor the event, which is being hosted by Smith & Williamson at: Portwall Place, Portwall Lane, Bristol BS1 6NA. Parking is available opposite the venue and Bristol Temple Meads train station is a short walk away.
In his presentation, Darren will cover:
- An insolvency practitioner’s statutory obligation to company pension schemes (the current approach to S120 of the Pensions Act 2004 and our findings to date)
- Background to company pension schemes (how schemes are set up by an employer and the different types of scheme out there)
- Going beyond the call of duty (the pitfalls with pension schemes, including DC arrangements)
- Case study
- Pension Brief and TrustEase – a simple approach from AFTS to ensure compliance with company pension schemes
- Questions
As usual, the evening will commence at 6pm for a 6.30 start and the formal presentation will finish by 7.30 when there will be drinks and canapés and an opportunity to network with fellow turnaround and pensions professionals.
